treasuring up the little things

Its the little things that I'm learning to look for....and treasure

Yesterday I was spending some time in the Word, reading about Jesus' birth.  It is a mesmerizing tale, but I can't help but get a little frustrated with the writers of the gospels.  They tell us about His birth and His adult years, but leave out what I'm sure would have been my favorite...His childhood.

Despite my disappointment, I have learned to appreciate the little that they did write.  My favorite part is a little verse tucked in Luke 2:19 -
"But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart."

All these things...what things?  Surely she treasured up some of the same things that I'm busy treasuring up these days.  Chubby little fingers, random smiles, contagious laughter, watching someone you love experience something new...

But what else?  Did she get to see Jesus' first steps?  What were they like?  Did the ONE who spoke the Universe into being have a profound first word or was He just like any other baby, starting with those adorable coos that turn into syllables and finally...mama, dada, more....

Oh, how I wish a woman would have written one of the gospels!  Surely she would have gone into greater detail.  Maybe God knew all along that if women would have penned the pages of the Bible, they would have been too numerous to count.

At any rate, I like that Luke noted Mary's ponderings...her simple, yet profound motherly act of treasuring up the little things.

So I'm trying to do that, too.  Treasure up the little things.  Take time to ponder this divine blessing.

Here are some of the most recent treasures I've pondered.....

learning hopscotch

from a talented teacher

roasting pumpkin seeds

check out that shake

favorite toys

climbing trees

and hoping they inherit his sense of adventure

I'm not sure what Mary treasured up...nor what she pondered.
I like to think that she probably soaked up her little
One the same way that I'm soaking up mine.
Little by little
Day by day
Thanking the Good Lord for each minute.

  1. It is obvious where your Treasure is, Krog. In your family. That's where your heart is. Beautiful to behold. Thanx for letting us eavesdrop.
